In case you haven’t noticed, jazz has been re-re-reinvented (again) and Thundercat is one of its new champions. The man born Stephen Bruner rose to fame alongside Flying Lotus, the beatmaker who enlisted the young, LA-based bassist-singer-composer-shaman to provide prodigious—as in six-string—low-end on his landmark album Cosmogramma. Since then Thundercat has found his own fame with his own band, which includes his brother Ronald, a drummer who’s played with Suicidal Tendencies and won a Grammy for his work with the Stanley Clarke Band. Pedigree plus innovation: That’s what jazz is all about.
