If you're like us, you're bored with 90% of the music that reaches your ears, 99% of which is produced in the US. Good to look beyond our borders to find something unprecedented and irresistible: Songhoy Blues, for instance, a ripping trance-rock band from Bamako, Mali. Led by Garba Touré, a young guitarist raised on Hendrix and hip-hop who fled his hometown of Timbuktu after a militia uprising imposed Sharia law forbidding music (IMAGINE THAT), Songhoy Blues released Résistance, their second album, in June of this year; backed by an aggressive rhythm section, weird keyboards, occasional horns and strings and a children's choir—and a cameo by Iggy Pop—it's thrilling psych-rock that made a believer out of us.
