Celebrating the 50th anniversary of its premiere, George Balanchine’s Jewels returns to Pacific Northwest Ballet to open the 2017/’18 season with new costume and scenic designs created for PNB by Jerome Kaplan. A triptych set to three different composers, Jewels is a masterful study of ballet, opening with Emeralds (a romantic piece evoking the French school of dance), sliding into Rubies (a quick-paced piece of American dance featuring a lead couple and supporting corps) and finishing off with Diamonds (an intimate pas de deux that nods to Balanchine’s native St. Petersburg, Russia).
